Karsten Födinger: »GUTTA«
The completion of the artwork is delayed due to technical reasons. Unfortunately, »GUTTA« therefore couldn't be visited during the Production Art Festival. Further information will be published here as soon as possible.
The inspiration for Karsten Födinger's works comes from the places in which they are created. He likes to use his art to turn a particular feature of a city, region or landscape into something visible and tangible. He does this by using local materials in his sculptures. He created his work »GUTTA« (from the Latin for drop) in Bad Urach. It was inspired by the observation that the minerals in the water flowing over the Urach waterfall are deposited as a form of limestone known as travertine. Many of the historic buildings in Bad Urach are built from this kind of limestone.
Födinger obtained masonry from former travertine buildings from a local builder's yard and used them to build a fountain: a minimalist collage of Bad Urach's historic architecture.
The fountain is fed by water from the Erms river using pump technology provided by URACA, a company based in Bad Urach. The constellation allows Födinger to achieve a similar effect to the one he observed at the waterfall. The minerals in the water are gradually deposited on the fountain's structure. The sculpture will slowly but steadily change shape, not through the artist but as a result of natural sedimentation. The angular structure of the fountain will turn into something much more amorphous.
Karsten Födinger, born in Mönchengladbach in 1978, studied for his Master's degree under Professors Umberg and Meuser at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe from 2003 to 2009. He is the recipient of many awards, including the Baloise Art Prize, and has received grants from the Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg and the Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris. Födinger's work is mainly based on specific locations and local materials. He carries out a detailed examination of a particular place and then creates a sculpture that is rooted in that location. In his work, he aims to combine location and additional materials into a cohesive whole. Födinger lives in Berlin.
