Simon Jones Studio: »Bracket furniture«
Since its foundation in 1978, the Stuttgart Künstlerhaus has become a national exhibition space for contemporary art, and also a place of encounter. It offers a programme of exhibitions and events and houses artists' studios, workshops and a café. When it was founded, the café on the ground floor provided the centre's social hub and also served at the entrance to the Künstlerhaus. The guests used tables and chairs that had been made in the centre's own workshops. Unfortunately, this unique atmosphere was lost when the entrance was relocated and the catering concept changed.
Simon Jones and Jack Neville (Simon Jones Studio) now looked back to the café's origins and designed furniture and fixtures especially for it.
The new furniture was to be robust and simple, aesthetic and functional – furniture that can be adapted and modified to specific needs and dimensions. The furniture has a modular design, with special steel connecting brackets that allow timber to be cut to size and turned into tables, benches, chairs, stools, shelves and platforms. Like in the early days, the individual pieces of furniture were produced directly in the Künstlerhaus by their future users in a workshop with Simon Jones and Jack Neville.
The Simon Jones Studio is a multidisciplinary design studio from London, consisting of designers Simon Jones and Jack Neville, who have been working together since 2010. Their work is a mix of architectural projects, exhibition design, furniture production and practical manufacturing. The focus is on the practical work in the workshops, and above all on the materials used. The studio works with numerous London art institutions and organisations, including Raven Row, the Design Museum and Studio Voltaire & Allied Editions. Simon Jones was also involved in Fatima Hellberg's first exhibition as artistic director of the Künstlerhaus. The studio produces its own collection of tables and seating and has recently designed furniture for HAY and IKEA.
